I recently revisited Ninth House, a gripping novel that captivated me from start to finish. Upon reflection, I realized that I had made a monumental mistake in my previous review. I misjudged the connection between Darlington and Alex, claiming that they had no romantic compatibility. But I was wrong, so incredibly wrong. Alex and Darlington are not only deeply in love with each other, but they also share a dark side as murderers. Together, they are a match made in hell.

Unraveling the Intricacies of Ninth House
The story revolves around Galaxy Stern, who enrolls at Yale and becomes a part of Lethe, a secret society tasked with monitoring and preventing the misuse of magic by other secret societies. Alex assumes the role of Dante, the newcomer, while Darlington serves as her mentor and takes on the persona of Virgil. As the plot unfolds, Alex is left to oversee the nine houses alone when Darlington mysteriously disappears. When a young woman is found dead in New Haven, Alex senses a deeper conspiracy and embarks on a quest to uncover the truth with the help of Turner and Dawes. It is through this investigation that Alex’s true nature and her capacity for murder are revealed.
Alex’s Journey of Desperation and Love
In this novel, we witness Alex struggling to balance her rigorous coursework and her responsibilities within Lethe. Filled with anxiety, she nearly abandons a mundane ritual. However, as we delve into her memories, particularly the fateful day at the butterfly observatory, we gain insight into the events that led her to become a social outcast and eventually a murderer. Alex yearns for companionship and love, finding solace in her relationship with Len. But their connection is tainted by Len’s selfishness and exploitation of Alex for sex and labor. It is her love for Hellie, a dreamer who envisions a future with Alex, that drives her to commit heinous acts of murder. While Alex may not regret her actions, she is determined to never be placed in such a position again, leading her to accept Lethe’s offer and relocate to New Haven to start afresh.
Darlington’s Hidden Darkness
Contrary to popular belief, Darlington, the Golden Boy of Lethe, is not the gentleman he appears to be. We gain insight into his life through his chapters, witnessing his devotion to Lethe, his care for his grandfather’s house and his cat Cosmo, as well as his envy and eventual admiration of Alex. We are given a glimpse into Darlington’s disturbing family dynamics when he confronts his parents about their plans to murder his sickly grandfather for financial gain. Shockingly, Darlington discovers that his grandfather has known about their sinister plot all along. These revelations shed light on Darlington’s character and foreshadow his transformation into something beyond human.
A Marriage Bound by Sin
At the end of Ninth House, as Alex unravels the mysteries surrounding Tara and North’s deaths, she comes to the startling realization that Darlington, consumed by a hellish beast, has transcended into a demon. Despite hearing Darlington’s voice during their attempt to summon him back, she allows herself to be convinced otherwise. The evidence suggests that murder is the key to this transformation, and it is in this aspect that Alex and Darlington find common ground. Both have tried to distance themselves from their pasts, with Darlington even changing his name from Daniel Arlington to Darlington. However, Darlington’s envy towards Alex’s abilities and the cruel actions he inflicts upon her indicate a darker side to his nature. Could this darkness be the key to their reunion in hell?
A Glimpse into Hell’s Wedding
Alex’s possession by Hellie and their shared desire for revenge offer insight into the depths of her love for Hellie. Their intimate moments and future plans mirror the connection Alex shares with Darlington, albeit on a more profound level. Alex’s murders were driven by her love for Hellie, and it is expected that her journey into hell in search of Darlington will unleash even greater violence. While Darlington’s killer is dead, Alex will not stop until she eliminates every threat in her path.
Conclusion: A Hellish Union Beckons
In conclusion, the bond between Alex and Darlington is destined for a hellish wedding. Their love is rooted in darkness and murder, a connection that will only grow stronger as they reunite in the depths of hell. Lethe and the other magical houses will bear witness to the chaos that ensues. As we eagerly await the sequel to Ninth House, envisioning the dramatic events that lie ahead, it is clear that Alex and Darlington’s union will be nothing short of catastrophic.
