Have you ever found yourself attracted to a missionary from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? You’re not alone. Many people wonder if missionaries can fall in love while they’re serving and what rules they must adhere to. Do missionaries actually marry people they meet on their mission? Let’s dive into this topic and find out.
Serving God Wholeheartedly
As a former missionary myself, I often received the same questions you have. During their missions, missionaries dedicate all their energy to serving God. To remain focused on the Lord’s work, they are not allowed to have romantic relationships or go on dates. However, once they finish their missionary service, they are encouraged to date and get married.
It’s not a sin to have romantic feelings for a missionary. However, it’s crucial to show great respect for their mission and wait until they complete their service before pursuing any relationship.
Mission Rules and Guidelines
Missionaries live by a strict code of rules while serving their missions. These rules are established to maintain a high standard of conduct and dedication to their purpose. When I was a missionary, I found these guidelines to be helpful rather than restrictive.
Missionaries receive a manual outlining the rules they must follow throughout their mission. Regarding relationships and interactions with the opposite sex, the manual advises the following:
- Missionaries should never be alone, flirt, or have inappropriate relationships with anyone of the opposite sex.
- They should not make phone calls, write letters, send emails, or accept calls or letters from anyone of the opposite sex living within or near the mission boundaries.
- Exceptions include communication between sister missionaries and their mission leaders, mission-related phone calls (confirming appointments, for example), and supportive letters to converts.
- Any situation that could potentially break these rules should be reported immediately to the mission president.
- Missionaries should not give advice to members or non-members regarding personal problems. Instead, they should refer individuals to their bishop or seek guidance from the mission president.
- It is not appropriate to have conversations with missionaries of the opposite sex, even if serving in a leadership position. Such conversations can lead to inappropriate feelings and relationships. In such cases, missionaries should always refer to their mission president.
These guidelines ensure missionaries remain focused on their purpose and avoid any distractions that may hinder their effectiveness in sharing the gospel.
The Importance of Focusing on the Mission
During their two-year or 18-month missions, missionaries give their undivided attention to teaching the gospel. They abstain from dating or pursuing romantic feelings and strive to live the law of chastity fully.
The work of a missionary can profoundly impact the lives of many people as they help individuals come to know Jesus Christ and live according to His teachings. I witnessed firsthand the tremendous positive changes in people’s lives as my companion and I taught them about the gospel.
I am grateful that I chose to obey the mission rules, allowing me to fully focus on achieving that goal.
What Should You Do If You Like a Missionary?
The best advice I can give you is to respect missionaries as servants of Jesus Christ and avoid distracting them from their mission. Instead, help them stay focused by refraining from initiating a romantic relationship with any missionary.
Deep emotions can be part of the conversion process and might be misinterpreted as romantic feelings during lessons. It’s best to keep those feelings at bay and concentrate on the missionary’s message.
Do Missionaries Marry People They Met on Their Missions?
Yes, it does happen sometimes. There are cases where missionaries who served in the same mission ended up marrying each other after their service. Additionally, many missionaries return to the place where they served their mission and start dating or marry someone they met during that time.
However, such instances are rare because missionaries do not prioritize dating while on their mission. It’s challenging for romantic feelings to develop while they are focused on their duties.
