Why Is It Called the Flower Moon?
The Old Farmer’s Almanac draws inspiration from Native American, Colonial American, and European sources for its full moon names. Traditionally, these names encompassed the entire lunar month rather than just the full moon itself. May’s full moon, known as the Flower Moon, owes its name to the plethora of blossoms that adorn North America during this time.
- The Algonquin people, confirmed by Christina Ruddy of The Algonquin Way Cultural Centre in Pikwakanagan, Ontario, attributed the name “Flower Moon”.
- Jonathan Carver, in his 1798 publication called Travels Through the Interior Parts of North America: 1766, 1767, 1768, referred to May’s moon as the “Month of Flowers,” suggesting a Dakota origin. Carver’s expedition covered areas including the Great Lakes, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, with extended stays among the Naudowessie (Dakota) tribe.
- Henry David Thoreau, inspired by Native American moon names, also mentioned the Flower Moon and Carver in his writings.
Alternative May Moon Names
May’s moon names beautifully embrace the arrival of spring and the wonders it brings. The awakening of local flora is celebrated through Cree names such as “Budding Moon” and “Leaf Budding Moon.” Additionally, the Dakota and Lakota tribes associate this moon with the time to start planting seeds for the upcoming farming season, calling it the “Planting Moon.”
Spring’s arrival is not just signified by the awakening of plants, but also by the activities of animals. Cree names like “Egg Laying Moon” and “Frog Moon,” along with the Oglala term “Moon of the Shedding Ponies,” emphasize the anticipation of warmer weather.
