A City of Hope
Calcutta, India, was the beloved city that Mother Teresa called home. Known simply as “mother” in the streets she walked with grace, this city held a special place in her heart. When we asked people what it was about Calcutta that appealed to her, they all agreed – it is a city of hope.
Hope in the Midst of Poverty
In the overcrowded and impoverished streets of Calcutta, hope can be hard to fathom for some. But within the walls of Mother Teresa’s house, a beacon of hope thrives. The Sisters of Charity, who call this place home, continue her work with unwavering devotion.
Embracing the Forgotten
Mother Teresa’s love knew no bounds, but it was the children who held a particularly special place in her heart. In the orphanage she founded, there are currently around 150 infants, many of whom will find forever homes through adoption. Some were abandoned, some were given up by young unwed mothers, and others were brought here because their parents had no means to feed them.
The sisters provide love and care to all the children under their roof, regardless of their circumstances. They go above and beyond to ensure that each child receives more than just the basics.
The Memory of Giving
As the children in the orphanage grow, most of them will not remember Mother Teresa. However, they will undoubtedly learn to cherish her memory and the legacy she left behind. They will come to understand the true meaning of giving, inspired by the woman who dedicated her life to selflessness.
Honoring Mother Teresa
The tribute to Mother Teresa has already commenced. Generals have draped the Indian flag over her body, while the nuns from her order gather to offer prayers of solace. A solemn ceremony in a Calcutta church paves the way for her funeral, which will take place on Saturday. The Indian military will maintain an around-the-clock vigil over her body until then.
The world will have the opportunity to pay their respects as the funeral will be broadcast live on WRAL-TV5. CBS coverage will begin early on Saturday morning, with Dan Rather reporting live from Calcutta. And our very own David Crabtree will continue to file reports directly from India, offering a firsthand account of the events.
Let us remember and celebrate the life of Mother Teresa – a woman who touched the lives of millions and became an enduring symbol of love, faith, strength, and hope.
