In the world of astrology, there is a fascinating debate surrounding Black Moon Lilith. As cosmicbeast mentioned in my previous post, there are actually two versions of Black Moon Lilith. This discrepancy arises from the fact that Black Moon Lilith is a mathematical point, leading to differing opinions on how to calculate it. As a result, we have Mean Lilith and True Lilith, each with its own set of followers. Confusing, right? Let’s dive into this intriguing topic.

Understanding Black Moon Lilith
First, let’s recap what we know about Black Moon Lilith. It is considered the secondary focal point in the Moon’s elliptical orbit. Now, if you were to envision this focal point moving smoothly around the zodiac, just like the Moon, you’d be mistaken. The Moon actually wobbles erratically, and this causes the second focal point to do the same.
Mean Lilith vs. True Lilith
In light of the Moon’s unpredictable movements, some astrologers believe that it makes more sense to calculate an average of the positions of the second focal point. This calculated point is known as Mean Lilith and is the widely accepted version of Black Moon Lilith. However, there are also astrologers who prefer to embrace the chaos and track the focal point as it is, with all its unpredictable wobbliness. This version is called True Lilith.
When it comes to Mean Lilith, it feels rather contradictory to associate it with the wild, dark feminine energy that Lilith represents. Mean Lilith is consistent, always following a predictable path, and never retrograde. It’s as if she has been thoroughly domesticated. This depiction contradicts the nature of Lilith, which symbolizes the untameable and rebellious spirit within all of us.
On the other hand, True Lilith captures the essence of Lilith’s wild nature. It embodies the idea of varying speeds, sudden changes, and retrograding on a whim. True Lilith refuses to be pinned down, finding amusement in our futile attempts to understand her.
The Power of True Lilith
In practice, I have witnessed the power of True Lilith in the lives of two incredible women close to me. Although generally soft and ultra-feminine, both of them have experienced the trauma of sexual abuse in their childhood. When this painful topic arises, they transform into fierce, furious, fire-spitting wildcats, rightfully expressing their anger. Interestingly, their charts reveal close aspects with True Lilith – one conjunct the Midheaven and opposite Pluto and Mercury, while the other sextile Pluto and square Chiron and the North Node. On the other hand, Mean Lilith makes only a few insignificant aspects in both charts. It becomes clear that True Lilith resonates more powerfully and accurately with their experiences, while Mean Lilith falls short.
