Utopia, the beloved Mediterranean-meets-Italian restaurant located at the bustling intersection of 1st Street and Linden Avenue in Downtown Long Beach (DTLB), will sadly be closing its doors after serving the community for an impressive 24 years. On October 28th, they will bid farewell and pass the torch to new owners who have exciting plans to transform the space into an Indian restaurant.
A Journey Filled with Memories and Community
Utopia took to Instagram to share the news with their loyal patrons, expressing gratitude for the incredible journey they’ve embarked on together. Over the past two decades, Utopia has been witness to countless celebrations, from joyful weddings and baby showers to heartfelt memorial services. Along the way, they have bid farewell to cherished friends while welcoming many new ones. The restaurant has also been a gathering place for the local community, hosting over 100 art shows and actively participating in various community events.
The owner of Utopia, Kamran Assadi, has been a true steward of the East Arts Village, the neighborhood where the restaurant resides. Utopia went beyond being a mere eatery; it served as a revolving gallery, showcasing the work of talented local artists. The restaurant has been a cornerstone of a neighborhood that sought to establish itself as a distinct and unique cultural hub.
An Unforgettable Gathering Place
Renowned writer James Scarborough aptly described Utopia as the “It Place” of the Long Beach cultural community. Its spacious and airy rooms have seen poets, artists, businessmen, and politicians come together, discussing projects, striking deals, and shaping legislation. During its peak, Utopia was frequented not only by prominent figures like the mayor and council members but also by nonprofit leaders and artists who saw the restaurant as both a business and social gathering point.
A New Chapter for Downtown Long Beach
While the closure of Utopia undoubtedly marks the end of an era and another loss for the East Village, there is a silver lining to look forward to. The upcoming Indian restaurant brings excitement to Downtown Long Beach’s culinary scene. With the previous closure of Kabob Curry and Fresh Kabobs, the last Indian cuisine establishment in the area, the arrival of a new Indian joint offers hope for expanding DTLB’s diverse culinary offerings.
As Utopia prepares to close its doors, let us take a moment to reflect on the incredible memories and the significant impact this restaurant has had on the community. Its role in nurturing local artists, facilitating connections, and bringing people together will always be remembered. Farewell, Utopia, and thank you for the remarkable journey you have provided for the past 25 years.
