“Where there is matter, there is geometry.” – Johannes Kepler
What is so magical and yet problematic about the seemingly simple geometric shape known as a Square? How does it affect our lives, both in design and in our physical existence? In this article, we will explore the profound significance and mystical symbolism of the Square, from its sacred geometric symbolism to its role in jewelry and everyday life.

The Square and our Physical World
Take a moment to look around you. You’ll notice that our physical world heavily relies on the principle of the Square. From buildings, doors, and windows to tiles, furniture, and books, the majority of objects are predominantly based on a rectangular shape. Perhaps you’re even sitting on something rather squarish right now. The Square is an integral part of our lives, supporting us every day.
In this world of matter, the Square not only physically supports us but also holds great mystical symbolism. At a sacred level, the Square is the fabric of the physical world itself.
The Principle of “4” – Emanation of the Square
If you have ever been interested in esoteric knowledge, you may have heard that the Square is a symbol of the physical world or the world of matter. Why is this so?
Geometrically speaking, in order to define any physical object – something that you can hypothetically touch – you need at least 4 points in space. Unlike the mind and spirit, physical substances possess volume and mass. This is where numerology connects to geometry and esoteric symbolism:
- Number 1 is related to a Dot and symbolizes beginnings and oneness.
- Number 2 represents a Line, defining length and the principle of opposition or dynamizing polarity.
- Number 3, when three dots are connected, creates a Triangle, defining a plane with width and length. However, three dots are not enough to make a physical object with volume, as physical objects require width, length, and height.
To bring a physical object into existence, we need the 4th dot – the tetrahedron. Defined by four points and four triangles, the tetrahedron finally has volume and can exist in the physical world. This is why the number 4 symbolizes the Square and why, in esoteric traditions, it is considered a symbol of matter.
Squares and rectangular shapes serve as the building blocks of our universe, from the tiniest particle of sand to towering skyscrapers.
The Symbolism of the Square – Power and Pitfalls
The Square’s power lies in its connection to Sacred Geometry. It symbolizes stability, the fixed nature of matter, strong foundations, and order. In the physical world, the Square represents a static configuration of matter, upholding solidity, reliability, and sturdiness.
However, as beneficial as stability may be, it also has its downsides. The Square’s static nature can lead to rigidity and fixedness. Matter, ruled by the domain of the Square, can become detached from spirit, lacking inspiration, compassion, love, and enthusiasm. In other words, it lacks idealistic values.
The Alchemy of Matter and Pyramids
Let’s revisit the symbolism of the Triangle, discussed in a previous blog post, “Triangle – the Power of Consciousness.” Triangles symbolize the Fire principle – the creative spirit of the universe. Fire moves fast, penetrating and purifying everything in its path.
In contrast, Matter, represented by the Square, is heavy and static, lacking dynamism. But what happens when we combine the principles of Triangle and Square? Geometrically speaking, we get a pyramid. Pyramids are said to possess supernatural powers. They preserve organic substances, amplify meditation experiences, improve sleep quality, and even provide health benefits through the positive effects of negative ions generated within their structures.
The power of pyramids lies in the combination of the sacred numbers 4 and 3. Number 4 brings groundedness and density, while Number 3 brings dynamism with its purifying fire. The Triangle, with its Fire, mitigates the natural deficiency of Matter (Square), allowing for transformative and magical experiences.
The Role of Square in Art, Design, and Jewelry
While squares are stable and reliable, they can be perceived as plain and uninteresting in their pure form, especially in the context of art, architecture, and design. To address this, squares are often combined with triangles to create intricate patterns that are both solid and dynamic.
Jewelry designs based on rectangular shapes represent stability and create a sense of equality and conformity. It’s no surprise that square-based designs are often used for men’s jewelry. However, women should not underestimate the benefits of this shape in certain situations. For example, for important business meetings or job interviews, wearing minimal geometric jewelry based on square and rectangular shapes can convey a sense of reliability, expertise, and attention to detail. Designs like our Magic Quad and Enigma collections speak confidence, independence, and style.
Conclusion
The Square holds profound significance in our physical world, representing stability, foundations, and solidity. However, its static nature can lead to rigidity and a disconnection from the spiritual realm. By combining the Square with the dynamic energy of the Triangle, we can unlock the transformative power within matter. This fusion of shapes has found its place in art, design, and even jewelry, allowing us to embrace both stability and dynamism in our lives.
